Ramesuan Upathumpan, Deputy Director of the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand, revealed that the domestic steel industry has continued to enjoy constant growth since 1999 in line with the expansion in the country’s major industries – including automobile production, electrical appliance manufacture, can-type container exports, together with the extension of water pipeline systems in the agricultural and industrial sectors and the continuation of government MEGA projects.
Domestic steel consumption in 2005 was recorded at 13.88 million tons and accounted for 262.314 billion Baht; while the export amount at 2,074,152 tons accounted for 54.102 billion Baht. This year’s domestic steel consumption is expected to increase by 8-10%. Currently, domestic consumption rate for steel stands at 70-80%, while the export rate is 20-30%.
Mr. Ramesuan stated that Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand is now preparing to host ‘Bangkok Steel Exhibition & Conference 2006’ from 13 to 15 July 2006 at the Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon Shopping Complex. In addition, the Institute has joined forces with Thainox Stainless PCL in holding the ‘Thainox Design Award’ – Thailand’s first-ever design contest that allows contestants to integrate stainless steel in their design works under the ‘Street and Outdoor Furniture’ concept. Chatchai Sombatsiri, Metallurgy Director of Thainox Stainless PCL, added that the ‘Thainox Design Award’ welcomes both students and the general public not over 25 years of age to participate and demonstrate their design creativity.
